More than 300 residents have been forced to leave their homes after suspected armed herders launched coordinated attacks on several communities in Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State. Reports from local authorities confirmed that at least 30 houses were burnt and farmlands destroyed, leaving families stranded just as the harvest season was about to begin.
Danaan Cletus Sylvanus, spokesperson to the Chairman of Qua’an-Pan LGA, said the affected villages include Nteng, Doop, Zhep Morop, Gyeergu, Kelaghan, Loon, Kwakii, and Gorom in the Doemak District. He explained that the attackers not only razed homes but also destroyed barns where farm produce had been stored, worsening the hardship of the displaced residents.
Chairman of Qua’an-Pan, Christopher Manship, condemned the incident during a security meeting held in Doemak. He appealed to traditional leaders, faith-based organizations, and development associations to work closely with the council in finding a lasting solution to the recurring violence. He also assured that security agencies had been deployed to the troubled communities to restore calm and protect returning residents.
According to Sylvanus, Manship personally visited the affected villages to assess the situation and sympathize with victims. The Chairman urged security operatives to remain alert and proactive, stressing that the safety and welfare of citizens remain the top priority of his administration. He promised displaced residents that efforts are underway to guarantee their safe return and rebuild confidence within the communities.
The latest attacks, which came towards the end of August, highlight the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State. While calm has returned in some areas, displaced families are still taking shelter in temporary camps and nearby villages, hoping for urgent humanitarian support and long-term peace.
