The troops of Operation HADIN KAI successfully thwarted a planned attack by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State, neutralizing 13 terrorists during a failed ambush on their convoy in Kareto. Kareto, located in Mobbar Local Government Area, has been a hotspot for repeated insurgent activities in recent months.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the ambush took place on Wednesday, 3rd September 2025, as the military personnel provided escort to humanitarian aid trucks moving along the Gubio–Damasak route. During the attack, the insurgents detonated two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and opened heavy gunfire on the troops.
Despite the intensity of the assault, the troops responded quickly and decisively, overpowering the insurgents with superior firepower. Thirteen insurgents were killed on the spot, while others fled in disarray. During a follow-up operation, the troops recovered eight AK-47 rifles, ten rifle magazines, large quantities of 7.62mm ammunition, detonating cords, primed IEDs, and a camel bag used for explosives.
The engagement left one soldier slightly injured, though he is now stable. Four MRAP vehicle tires were damaged, and two trucks were destroyed by fire. Nevertheless, the troops have maintained continuous security operations in the area to prevent further insurgent activity while ensuring the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Damasak.
This latest success reinforces the commitment of Nigerian security forces to protect vulnerable communities in the North-East and to deny Boko Haram freedom of action.
