FG vows support for victims, survivors of Niger boat tragedy through NEMA

The Federal Government has pledged to stand by the families who lost loved ones and those who survived the recent boat tragedy in Borgu, Niger State. According to a statement personally signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government is working with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to deliver urgent support and relief.

The accident, which happened on Tuesday, claimed thirty-two lives while around fifty passengers were rescued. The minister described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that it comes only months after severe flooding caused destruction in Mokwa, another community in Niger State.

Idris extended condolences on behalf of the government to the victims’ families and the people of Niger State. He assured that NEMA would coordinate closely with the state government to ensure assistance reaches those affected without delay. He also acknowledged the quick action of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency for ensuring all passengers on board were accounted for during the rescue operations.

The minister used the opportunity to urge Nigerians to make safety a priority when traveling across waterways. He emphasized that passengers should not board boats without life jackets, pointing out that such simple precautions can determine survival during emergencies.

Beyond immediate relief, the federal government has directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to begin a nationwide awareness campaign. The aim is to educate citizens on safety practices when using inland waterways, helping to prevent future tragedies.

This reassurance of support follows renewed calls for stronger safety measures and community sensitization in riverine areas across the country.
