Russian missile and drone strikes overnight shook several Ukrainian cities, leaving at least two people dead and many more injured, according to emergency services. Authorities confirmed that the capital, Kyiv, was one of the hardest-hit areas, where explosions damaged multiple high-rise buildings and set upper floors on fire. Firefighters managed to contain the flames while rescue teams continued operations, with officials reporting that one person was killed and 18 others wounded in the city.
Local authorities also confirmed that the northeastern Sumy region came under attack. A strike on the outskirts of Putyvyl killed one person and injured several others, including a young child. In the southeast, Zaporizhzhia was struck by Russian drones late Saturday, leaving at least 15 people injured. Four of the victims remain hospitalized, while photos released by officials showed shattered apartment blocks and families displaced from their homes.
Ukraine’s nationwide air alert was declared early in the morning at around 6:06 am local time, urging residents across the country to seek shelter as the waves of strikes unfolded. Officials emphasized that the attacks targeted both residential neighborhoods and critical infrastructure, adding to the destruction already caused by years of conflict.
Currently, Russian forces are estimated to occupy nearly one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory, underscoring the scale of the war that began with Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Despite numerous diplomatic efforts, including recent moves by two dozen nations led by France and the United Kingdom to propose an international security force that could guarantee any peace deal, Moscow has rejected such measures outright. President Vladimir Putin declared that the deployment of Western troops inside Ukraine would be seen as a direct threat and legitimate targets for Russian forces.
