🇳🇬 The Federal Government is actively working to eliminate hurdles in digital payments and e-commerce across Nigeria, aiming to ensure smooth and accessible transactions for all citizens.

During a stakeholders’ roundtable in Abuja, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Hadejia, emphasized that the administration under President Bola Tinubu is focused on financial inclusion, making digital payments easy for everyone, even in remote areas.

Hadejia highlighted that Nigeria has the potential to offer payment and banking convenience comparable to the best in the West, and addressing these issues would open new doors for e-commerce nationwide. He pointed out that challenges such as payment ease, identity verification, and cross-border transactions need urgent solutions.

Key points from the discussions include:

  • Enhancing digital payment infrastructure to reach the last mile.
  • Integrating digital identity systems to improve access and security.
  • Leveraging experiences from countries like India to boost e-commerce and trade.
  • Supporting the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) with digital trade protocols.

Experts, including Dr. Max Mendez-Parra from ODI Global, stressed the transformative impact of AfCFTA on Nigeria’s economy, highlighting the role of digital trade and investment protocols in fostering growth.

Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, outlined the ‘AFCTA DG Pass’ initiative for operationalising digital identities, while ICT Policy SA Salisu Nakande reinforced the importance of seamless payments for expanding trade opportunities.

With these measures, Nigeria aims to remove barriers, ensure financial inclusion, and strengthen the nation’s e-commerce ecosystem.
