Super Eagles Draw 1-1 with South Africa: NFF Criticizes Dessers and Troost-Ekong

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed strong criticism of striker Cyriel Dessers and captain William Troost-Ekong following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers held Tuesday in Bloemfontein.

The Super Eagles needed a win to boost their qualification chances, but an early injury to defender Ola Aina in the eighth minute disrupted the team’s rhythm. Matters worsened when Troost-Ekong accidentally scored an own goal in the 25th minute, handing Bafana Bafana the lead.

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey managed to restore parity just before halftime with a powerful header, but the team could not capitalize on their possession advantage in the second half. Substitutes Tolu Arokodare, Samuel Chukwueze, and Chrisantus Uche struggled to make significant contributions.

In an official statement, NFF Director of Communications Dr. Ademola Olajire singled out Dessers for his underwhelming performance, noting he was substituted at halftime due to lack of impact. “Dessers struggled with speed and aerial duels, limiting the Nigerian attack,” the statement read.

Ekong’s own goal was also highlighted as a moment that temporarily deflated team morale. “The captain’s own goal in the 25th minute gave South Africa momentum and challenged the Eagles’ resolve,” the federation said.

On the other hand, Bassey received praise for his determination and resilience in bringing Nigeria back into the game. His header, assisted by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, leveled the score before halftime.

Despite remaining in contention with 11 points from eight games, the Super Eagles must now win their remaining matches against Lesotho and Benin Republic, while hoping for favorable results in other Group C matches to qualify for next year’s World Cup in North America. South Africa leads the group with 17 points.

  • Early injury to Ola Aina disrupted team dynamics.
  • Troost-Ekong’s own goal gave South Africa the lead.
